In Short

  • Imran Tahir and David Warner won the Purple and Orange Caps respectively in IPL 2019
  • Rohit Sharma won the IPL for the 5th time on Sunday, more than any other player in history
  • Rohit is also the only captain to lift the IPL trophy 4 times, all with Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians became the most successful side in the history of the Indian Premier League on May 12, 2019. They beat Chennai Super Kings by 1 run in a last-ball thriller to become the first team to win the IPL 4 times.

Chennai Super Kings also had the opportunity to win the IPL crown for a record 4th time. CSK had won the IPL in 2010, 2011 and 2018 but they failed to defend their title after Lasith Malinga bowled a sensational final over in a nail-biting finish to the title clash.

Mumbai Indians had first won the Indian Premier League in 2013 before reclaiming the title in 2015 and winning it again in 2017. They failed to qualify for the playoffs after a nightmarish season in 2018 but MI came back hard in 2019 to lift the trophy for the 4th time.

Rohit Sharma, who has led Mumbai Indians to 4 IPL titles, is now the only player to win the IPL as many as 5 times. He was part of the Deccan Chargers which won the 2nd edition of the Indian Premier League in 2009.

Meanwhile, David Warner of Sunrisers Hyderabad won the Orange Cap after scoring 692 runs from 12 matches while Imran Tahir picked up the Purple Cap with 26 wickets.

David Warner is the first player to win the Purple Cap 3 times. He won it in 2015, 2017 and 2019. He did not play in 2018 because of the ball-tampering scandal but he came back with a bang to make it a memorable season for himself and the team. Sunrisers Hyderabad, who had lost the final in 2018, reached the playoffs this year and that was due to the efforts of David Warner and his opening partner Jonny Bairstow who had set up massive wins for the team before leaving for World Cup preparations.

Imran Tahir became the oldest player and only the 2nd spinner after Pragyan Ojha to win the Purple Cap. Kagiso Rabada, Tahir's South African teammate was the runaway favourite to win the Purple Cap but Tahir snatched it from him in a last-gasp effort after Chennai Super Kings reached the final.

As the 12th edition of the Indian Premier League concludes, we draw out a full list of champions, Orange Cap and Purple Cap winners from 2008.
