KAL PENN WRITES MESSAGE TO BABIL KHAN

The message by Kal Penn reads, "Babil, I'm so moved that you reached out and it means so much to me to hear that story. Thank you. The Namesake is the project I'm most proud of, the one that brought me the greatest artistic happiness - and getting to work with and know your father was such a big part of that. (I think I met you and your brother in Calcutta when we were filming) I've thought of you two and your mom a lot this past year and wasn't sure how to get in touch to share my love and gratitude. It really means so much to me that you reached you. Thank you! Let me know it you're ever in New York post-pandemic. And please give my love to your mom (sic)."

Kal Penn played the role of Gogol in the film and Irrfan played Ashoke, his father. The film released in 2006 and was helmed by Mira Nair. After Irrfan's death on April 29, 2020, Kal had paid a tribute to the late actor. He took to Instagram and wrote, "Irrfan’s art and humanity will be badly missed. Never seen someone use the beats of silence so beautifully to convey so much about who we are. Sending love to Sutapa and the family. #IrrfanKhan"

Babil captioned the post, "This was intense on a level I could not explain. I was deleting unnecessary chats from my WhatsApp and I found this. For f**k’s sake. I was almost about to text him back just for the thrill of feeling like “mera bhai idhar hi hai mere saath”."

A few days back, Babil had shared an old picture of Irrfan, remembering the late actor. He wrote, "For in my dreams, I have no knowledge of your desertion. In my dreams today, you told me you were about to leave me and you held me for so long. Imagine the fact that I just woke up cause my phone rang for yet another offer to act, for yet another film. Now what sense does all this make without you Baba? I’d rather keep dreaming. (Tears make it hard to type, someone invent a phone for people that cry a lot plis) (sic)."

Irrfan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in 2018, a rare form of cancer that attacks various parts of the body. The actor went for treatment for the same in the UK. After a year of living in the UK, he returned to India to shoot for his last film Angrezi Medium. Irrfan breathed his last on April 29, 2020.
