Bhajan singer Narendra Chanchal dies at 80 in Delhi. PM Modi pays tribute

Singer Narendra Chanchal, acclaimed for his hymns and religious songs, died at a hospital in Delhi on January 22. He was 80. Renowned for his bhajans, Narendra Chanchal breathed his last today afternoon at 12:15pm.

Punjab Kesari reports that Narendra Chanchal was not keeping well and was receiving treatment since the past three months.

On Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar paid tribute.

Sufi singer Master Saleem and cricketer Harbhajan Singh paid their last respects to Narendra Chanchal and remembered the "iconic" singer.

"Deeply saddened to learn that iconic and most loved #NarendraChanchal ji has left us for the heavenly abode. In prayers for his soul to rest in peace. Heartfelt condolences to his family," Harbhajan Singh tweeted.

WHO IS NARENDRA CHANCHAL?

Born in a religious Punjabi family in Namak Mandi, Amritsar in 1940, Narendra Chanchal provided vocals to songs such as Beshak Mandir Masjid (Bobby, 1973), Baki Kuchh Bacha (Roti Kapda Aur Makan, 1974) and Huye Hain Kuchh Aise (Anjaane, 1994).

For Beshak Mandir Masjid, Narendra Chanchal won the Filmfare Best Male Playback Award. He also earned honorary citizenship of the US state of Georgia.

Narendra Chanchal also released his autobiography Midnight Singer.
