Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan), a Punjab-based farmer union, has announced a march to Delhi on April 21 to protest against the Centre's agricultural laws.

According to a statement, the farmer union leaders said apart from farmers, women, tribals, unemployed people and socially disadvantaged groups will also participate in the march.

The march, the farmer union leaders claim, will be the answer to the critics and the central government, which believe that the presence of farmers at various protest sites in Delhi have thinned due to the crop harvest season.

Besides the BKU (EU), several other Punjab-based farmer unions have also started preparations for the march to Delhi, which will also pave the way for the proposed march to Parliament, the statement said.

Kul Hind Kisan Sabha, a farmer union, is organising farmer meets at the village level in a bid to attract more people to participate in the protest in Delhi.

"Rumours are being spread that farmers have started leaving the protest sites. Farmers have not lost hope and will leave their villages on April 21 after the harvest season is over. We will implement whatever directions will be issued by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha," said Karmvir Kaur Mahewhwari, a woman activist of Kul Hind Kisan Sabha.

Another farmer leader from the same union, Surat Singh Dharmkot, also said that while farmers have returned to their villages from the protest in Delhi, they will resume their agitation once the harvest season is over.

"This is not to say that the farmers have deserted the protest sites at Delhi. Farmers are regularly going to Delhi on a rotational basis. Those back home are helping them so that their families do not face difficulty in harvesting the crops," Dharmkot added.

The BKU (EU) said the idea behind the march on April 21 is to strengthen numbers at the protest sites in the national capital besides getting the adequate number of people for the proposed march to Parliament.

Though the date for the Parliament march has not been finalised, it is likely to be held in May. Earlier, the planned march was supposed to be organised during the budget session but was deferred following January 26 violence between farmers and policemen at Red Fort and other places in Delhi.
