Trying to get barcodes for food packets in trains: Piyush Goyal
With help of the barcode, the passenger will get live feed of the kitchen and details of date and time when the food was prepared.
Union minister Piyush Goyal has said the Indian Railways plan to use barcodes on food packets served in trains to keep a check on the quality of served food.
"Our aim is to have a barcode on food packets so people can scan the code which would take them to the live feed of the kitchen in which it was prepared," Piyush Goyal said at the launch of Rail Drishti Dashboard on Monday.
Rail Drishti Dashboard is an online portal where people can access information related to passenger and freight trains, view live feeds of IRCTC kitchens and the rail time table.
The Union minister added that through the barcode, the passenger will get details of date and time when the food was prepared along with live feed of the kitchen.
On being asked when the process of barcoding food packets will start, the Minister of Railways and Coal said they are still working on it.
"A lot of work goes into a proposal. We are working out on the modalities," Piyush Goyal said.
During the event, railway minister Piyush Goyal added that the Rail Land Development Authority and Dharavi Redevelopment Authority have reached an agreement that 45 acres of surplus land belonging to Railways will be given to Dharavi Redevelopment Authority on lease for 99 years.
