Mumbai Police registers 778 drunken driving cases during New Year celebrations

During the drive conducted at 34 major traffic junctions, check posts and toll posts in the Eastern, Western, Central and South Mumbai, 778 persons were found to be driving their vehicles under the influence of alcohol beyond the permissible limits.

The Mumbai Traffic Police on Tuesday conducted a massive drive against people driving their vehicles after consuming alcohol across the city starting from the evening of December 31 till around 6 am on January 1, 2020. In the time the drive was conducted, a total of 778 persons were found to be driving their vehicles in a drunken state.

During the drive conducted at 34 major traffic junctions, check posts and toll posts in the Eastern, Western, Central and South Mumbai, 778 persons were found to be driving their vehicles under the influence of alcohol beyond the permissible limits. Surprise checks were also conducted on the arterial roads and lanes across the city.

The number of drunken driving cases this New Year's Eve as compared to 2018's has seen a rise of around 79 per cent. In 2019, 578 people riding two-wheelers and 200 driving four-wheelers were fined by traffic police officials for drunk driving.

The highest number of drunken driving happened at the Dahisar Check naka which is the entry and exit point of the city towards the western suburbs.

Fifty-eight persons were caught and fined by the police at Dahisar which included 50 persons on two-wheelers. This was followed by an action taken at the Mulund check naka which is the entry and exit point of the city towards the central suburbs.

Thirty-five persons were penalised at Mulund. Areas around Juhu also saw a surge in people being penalised for drunken driving followed by areas like DN Nagar, Sanat Cruz, Ghatkopar, Kandivali and Dindoshi.

Apart from drunken driving, a total of 1,100 persons were penalised in the same period for various traffic violations across the city. Those penalised for traffic violations included 601 who were penalised for jumping signals, 258 for riding triple seat on their bikes and scooters, and 241 for over-speeding.
