The J&K leaders were put under house arrest on after the government moved to scrap special status under Article 370. Two former chief ministers of J&K -- Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti are also under detention. Another former chief minister and sitting Lok Sabha MP from Srinagar Farooq Abdullah is under arrest under the Public Safety Act.

The administration, however, freed the Jammu region leaders on Wednesday. When asked about their Kashmir counterparts, Governor Satya Pal's adviser told ANI: "Yes, one by one after analysis of every individual, they will be released."

The move to release the Jammu leaders came a day after the Election Commission announced local polls. The election authorities on Tuesday issued a notification for the election of chairpersons of Block Development Councils (BDC) in the 310 blocks of Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Electoral Officer Shailendra Kumar, while issuing the notification, said the elections will be held on October 24.
