Covid-19: Nashik man wipes nose, mouth with money in TikTok video, arrested

A court has remanded the man, 38, to police custody till April 7, an official said. A video showing him wiping his nose and mouth with currency notes has been doing the rounds on social media.

A Nashik man was arrested this week for a TikTok video showing him wiping his nose and mouth with currency notes, while all of India is under lockdown to slow the spread of a potentially fatal respiratory disease caused by a novel coronavirus.

Sayyad Jameel Sayyad Babu, 38, was arrested Thursday in Malegaon.

"After the video went viral, we arrested him. He has been remanded in police custody till April 7 by a court in Malegaon," an official was quoted as saying by PTI.

Maharashtra has 423 coronavirus cases, and as many as 19 have died of Covid-19, the respiratory illness caused by the pathogen, government data show.

Active cases have crossed 2,650 nationwide, and the death toll is 68 as of this writing.

The new coronavirus, known as Sars-CoV-2, spreads mainly through respiratory droplets. India has imposed a three-week lockdown to enforce social distancing and prevent people from spreading infections.
