Holiday declared for schools in Chennai today due to heavy rains

Besides Chennai, schools and colleges in four districts -- Villupuram, Ariyalur, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam -- of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry's Karaikal have been ordered to shut down due to heavy rains.

In the wake of incessant rain in several districts in Tamil Nadu, the Chennai district collector declared a holiday for schools in the city on Wednesday.

Schools and colleges in Villupuram, Ariyalur, Cuddalore, and Nagapattinam will also remain closed. Educational institutions in Union territory Puducherry's Karaikal have also been ordered to remain shut due to heavy rains.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that Chennai and nearby districts will receive rain on Wednesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, the IMD said, "Orange Alert! Coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.6 to 204.4 mm) on November 13th and 14th. Stay safe, stay informed."

Besides Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the Met department has also predicted light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms in Kerala and coastal Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday and Wednesday.
