‘If a situation arises…’:Rajinikanth on joining hands with Kamal Haasan

“If a situation arises wherein me and Kamal have to join hands for the welfare of people of Tamil Nadu, we will surely come together,” Rajinikanth said in a brief interaction with media at the Chennai airport.

Haasan also made a similar statement earlier saying the two would come together if the need arises.

“There is no need for creating a new bonding between myself and Rajinikanth. We have been friends for around 44 years. If the need arises, we will come together for the betterment of Tamil Nadu,” Haasan said.

Rajinikanth did not field any candidates in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, saying he has his sights set on the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in 2021. He also did not back any party in the previous general election.

Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), however, contested in 40 Lok Sabha seats, 39 in Tamil Nadu and one in Puducherry. The party’s candidates had lost deposits in all the 40 seats, but finished third in a few constituencies behind the DMK and AIADMK.

The remarks hinting at a possible tie up in the future comes in the backdrop of the two recently sharing stage at an event to mark Haasan’s 60 years in the cinema industry.

Significantly, Rajinikanth comments on Chief Minister Palaniswami at the event drew a sharp reaction from the ruling party AIADMK. On Sunday, Rajinikanth said “Palaniswami “would not even have dreamt” of becoming the chief minister and described the AIADMK leader’s elevation as “wonder and marvel”.

The ruling AIADMK has reacted sharply saying Palaniswami did not become chief minister by chance but made his way up through party ranks by sheer hardwork.

Haasan, however, backed Rajikanth on Tuesday saying: “It is not a criticism, but reality.. truth.”

Rajinikanth made his debut in the Tamil film Apoorva Ragangal (1975) starring Haasan and the late Srividya and ‘Major’ Sundarrajan in key roles. The two actors later went on to star in many movies, before both emerged icons.
