Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said “the reason for breakdown of institutional structures is that the man who runs the country believes in violence and indiscriminate power”.
Gandhi was addressing a meeting of party workers at Sulthan Bathery on the last day of his three-day visit to his constituency Wayanad.
“There is a reason for the breakdown of our institutional structures, a reason that people are taking law into their own hands. It is because the man who is running this country believes in violence and indiscriminate power,” he said, referring to the alleged rise in crimes against women.
“You have seen increase in violence across the country… Every day, we read about woman being raped, molested or thrashed… violence against minority communities and the hatred being spread against them… There is a reason for this dramatic increase in violence. You cannot believe in violence and hatred and then expect that violence and hatred not to spread,” Gandhi said.
The Congress leader said the world used to look towards India for direction, and towards Mahatma Gandhi, non-violence, love and affection.
“Today the world looks at us and say that India does not know how to treat its women and India does not know how to create jobs for its own people,” he said. “The international community today ridicules India. India is known as the rape capital of the world.”
