Pune: 6-year-old boy falls in 200-feet deep borewell, rescue operation underway

The incident took place in the afternoon in Thorandale village in Ambegaon taluka, some 75 kilometres from Pune city. Rescue officials said that the boy is stuck at a depth of around 10 to 12 feet.

Efforts are on to rescue a six-year-old boy who fell a few feet inside a 200-foot-deep borewell in a village in Ambegaon taluka on Wednesday afternoon. The rescue efforts are being led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities. Till the time of filing the report, the boy was responsive and his health was being monitored by doctors at the site.

The incident took place at Jadhavwadi area in Thorandale village in Ambegaon, around 70 km from Pune city. The boy, identified as Ravi Pandit Bhil, fell inside the uncovered borewell around 4.30 pm while playing in the area.

When his family members started searching for him, they realised he had fallen inside the borewell. Initially, a police team tried to rescue Ravi with the help of a rope, but as there was a chance of the boy getting injured, they decided to call in NDRF. Guided by the NDRF, police sent in oxygen supply and a team of doctors also reached the spot.

A team from the NDRF, based at Sudumbare near Talegaon, reached the spot around 8 pm. “To take the boy out, it was decided that a pit will be dug on the side of the borewell. By the time we reached, local villagers had already started digging… we took over the work. While digging through the initial few feet was easy, later the presence of a rocky layer made the digging difficult. Efforts to rescue the boy are in the last stage,” said an NDRF official.

Ravi is the son of a road construction worker and his family is from Parol in Jalgaon district.
