J&K: Militant, a PhD scholar, killed in encounter; Mehbooba rues losing educated boys everyday

Manan Bashir Wani, a PhD scholar-turned Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist, was killed along with one other militant during an encounter with security forces at Handwara district of north Kashmir, PTI reported. Wani, a PhD scholar with the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), had joined the militant ranks in January this year.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police and security forces received a specific intelligence about the presence of Wani, 27, along with two others at Satgund in Handwara in the early hours of the day. Despite police’s repeated announcements to surrender, the militants’ opened fired upon them, resulting in an exchange of fire which continued till 11 am.

Former chief minister and PDP mainstay Mehbooba Mufti termed Wani’s killing as “entirely our loss” and urged the political forces in the country to facilitate a dialogue with all the stakeholders, including Pakistan, to find a solution for this “bloodshed”. On microblogging site Twitter, she said: “Today a PhD scholar chose death over life & was killed in an encounter. His death is entirely our loss as we are losing young educated boys every day. It is high time that all the political parties in the country realise the gravity of this situation and try to facilitate a solution through dialogue with all the stakeholders including Pakistan to end this bloodshed.”
