A civilian was killed and three others were injured in Shahpur on Friday afternoon when Pakistan resorted to unprovoked mortar shelling and small arms fire at various places along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district.
Identifying the deceased as 55-year-old Baddar Din, a resident of Shahpur, police said that the deceased and several other villagers were on their way to a mosque to offer Friday prayers when Pakistani troops started firing mortar shells. Nearly half a dozen shells fell in close vicinity of the mosque, killing Din and injuring three others.
However, there was no damage to the mosque, police said, adding that the injured were evacuated to a local hospital. The shelling, which started around 12.30 pm continued for nearly four hours and Indian troops retaliated, the Army said.
