A 30-year-old Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan died after he “accidentally” shot himself in south Mumbai. The jawan, who was from Gujarat, was posted outside RIL Chairman & Managing Director Mukesh Ambani’s residence Antilia on Pedder Road when he allegedly misfired his service weapon twice. One bullet hit him on his chest leading to his death.
According to police, the incident took place around 7 pm on Wednesday, when the gun of the jawan, identified as Devdan Bakotra, misfired.
A senior officer under the condition of anonymity said, “He was posted at the secondary gate which is used by the staff of the house. While he was walking near the gate, the jawan had a mobile phone in one hand. He simultaneously tried to remove the strap of the rifle. He lost balance and accidentally pressed the rifle’s trigger firing two rounds.”
Bakotra was rushed to Jaslok hospital, where he was declared dead during treatment.
“Early on Thursday, his body was taken to JJ hospital for postmortem and his family members were informed,” said an officer.
Gamdevi police has lodged a case of accidental death. His body was sent to Junagadh in Gujarat. Dr Pallavi Saple, dean of JJ Hospital, said the body was brought on Thursday at 6.30 am. “We conducted the postmortem and handed the body to police,” she said.
The CRPF is entrusted with securing Ambani under the top ‘Z+’ category of VIP security cover.
