Locking horns at the Box Office on Thursday, Tamil movies Rajinikanth’s Petta and Ajith’s Viswasam have been sweating it out ever since, both of them raking in double digits. However, Viswasam is minting larger amount in Tamil Nadu than the Rajinikanth starrer.

While the opening day was a disappointment for the Rajinikanth’s fans as Petta performed under expectations, Petta’s collection is quite humongous globally. In his recent tweet, trade analyst Ramesh Bala pointed out, “The last time a #SuperstarRajinikanth movie opened at No.2 on Day 1 at the TN Box Office was Oct 25th, 1992 when #ThevarMagan opened better than #Pandian It took nearly 27 years and #Thala #Ajith’s #Viswasam opened better than #Petta at the TN Box office on Day 1(Jan 10th, 2019)” (sic).

At the Tamil Nadu box office, the collection differed from that of India’s as Viswasam raked Rs. 26 crores while Petta collected Rs. 23 crores. In the US, where Rajinikanth enjoys a loyal fan base, Petta collected over Rs 5 crore, having released in 251 locations in the country while Viswasam managed to rake in only Rs 59 lakhs there. Worldwide, Petta is galloping towards the Rs 50-crore-mark and looks close enough to nail it. The worldwide collection for Petta stood at Rs. 48 crores while that of Viswasam was 43 crores. Sharing the figures, Girish Johar, film critic, tweeted, “GOOD TIMES FOR SOUTH BO !!!!

Petta, directed by Karthik Subbaraj and produced by Kalanithi Maran, boasts of a stellar cast including Vijay Sethupathi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Trisha, Simran, Malavika Mohanan, Bobby Simhaa and Megha Akash in pivotal roles apart from Rajinikanth, Viswasam, directed by Siva and produced by Sendhil Thiyagarajan and Arjun Thiyagarajan, stars Nayanthara opposite Thala Ajith. Both the movies are expected to bear heated competition at the box office as they enter the Pongal holiday week and the box office figures will continue to speak as to who will emerge as a winner in this ultimate face off.
