Actor Govinda criticised filmmaker David Dhawan for his derogatory behaviour towards him a few months back. Now, in his latest interview, he wished David’s son, Varun Dhawan, the best for his upcoming film Coolie No. 1. The film is a remake of 1995 Govinda and Karishma Kapoor starrer and features Sara Ali Khan opposite Varun in the lead. Recently, during an interaction with Zoom, Govinda mentioned how Varun looks up to him and he wishes him the best for the success of Coolie No. 1 remake.

Govinda said he feels glad everytime a young actor tells him that his work has been an inspiration. He said, “We used to do that too when we were young. I go on tours and I’m told all the time that such and such young star says he wants to be like me.”

Earlier, during an interview with Rajat Sharma, Govinda had made controversial statements about parting ways with David Dhawan and what led to the differences between one of the most popular and successful director-actor jodis in Bollywood. He said the filmmaker stopped receiving his calls and refused to give him roles in his films citing that he was not worthy of meaty characters anymore.

“I heard David saying, Chi-Chi (Govinda’s nickname) is questioning a lot. He was telling my secretary, ‘I do not want to work with Govinda anymore. Tell him to do some small bit roles.’ This shocked me and I decided never to work with him. After 4-5 months, I again rang him up just to find out if he would give me a guest appearance in his film. He then never rang me back,” explained the actor.

Meanwhile, Varun met Govinda during the shoot of the 65th Filmfare Awards. The senior actor was felicitated with Excellence in Cinema award by the jury at the event that happened in Assam this year. Varun stepped down to touch Govinda’s feet in one of the most memorable moments of the evening.
