New Delhi: As Coronavirus pandemic created havoc across the United States, president Donald Trump extended ‘social distancing’ guidelines till April 30. Notably, the president had received grim projections about the likely toll of the pandemic, following which he decided to extend the federal anti-coronavirus guidelines till the end of next month.

“The better you do, the faster this whole nightmare will end,” the President said at a White House news conference. He also claimed that the United States will witness a peak in the number of fatalities due to COVID-19 in the next two weeks.

Anthony Fauci, one of the leading health experts on the task force team, had also warned that the US could see 100,000 to 200,000 deaths due to the contagious disease. When asked about the number of coronavirus deaths by one of the reporters, Trump said that the highest number will likely fall on Easter (April 12). “On Easter … that could be the peak number of deaths before it starts going down,” Trump said.

“Therefore, we will be extending our guidelines to April 30th, to slow the spread. On Tuesday we will be finalising these plans and providing a summary of our findings, supporting data and strategy to the American people”, he added.

According to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University, the United States now has more than 140,000 confirmed cases. The death of the country currently stands at 2,467.
