Over 25,000 Tablighi Jamaat Workers Quarantined, 5 Haryana Villages Sealed: MHA

MHA Joint Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava said that 1,750, out of total 2,083 foreigner Tablighi Jamaat members have been blacklisted till now in the country.

New Delhi: At a time when the coronavirus cases have crossed 4,000-mark with 109 deaths in the country, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday said that it has quarantined over 25,000 Tablighi Jamaat workers and their contacts across the country.

Addressing a press conference, MHA Joint Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava said that five Haryana villages where they visited have also been sealed.

She also added that 1,750, out of total 2,083 foreigner Tablighi Jamaat members have been blacklisted till now in the country.

Srivastava said that Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla has written to all states and Union Territories asking them to ensure that the supply chain of medical oxygen, critical for treatment of COVID-19 affected people, should go on smoothly while following norms of social distancing.

The MHA official on Sunday said that over 75 lakh needy people, including migrant labourers, have been provided with food at 19,460 special food camps which have been set up across the country in the wake of the lockdown.

“These special food camps are in addition to 27,661 shelters set up for migrant workers and needy people. A total of 12.5 lakh people have been given shelter in these arrangements,” the MHA said.

The development comes after a large number of migrant workers started leaving for their native states on foot in the absence of transport facilities and employment opportunities soon after the lockdown was imposed in the country.

Earlier, Srivastava had said 23,924 shelter camps have been set up by the state and Union Territory governments, while 3,737 shelters have been set by non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Meanwhile, area officers have also been appointed to resolve concerns of all stake holders and Railways has transported 7,630 rakes and 3.92 lakh wagons of essential items between March 25 and April 4.
