John Abraham on RAW: The film is not there to educate but to entertain

John Abraham is back to doing what he does the best and how! The actor who was last seen in Satyameva Jayate will be seen next in Romeo Akbar Walter (RAW) alongside Mouni Roy. The film is a spy-thriller based on the India-Pakistan conflict of 1971 and is all set to release tomorrow, on April 5. Now, it's not something we haven't seen John do before but the way he does it in this Robbie Grewal directorial has left us intrigued. In fact, in an interview with Mumbai Mirror, John Abraham maintains that the craft behind it is different. He said, "RAW is not a stereotypical patriotic film and it was not a conscious decision to do the film. The fact of the matter is I am an Indian lover. In my heart, I am very patriotic and for that same reason may be these kinds of films come to me or I gravitate to such scripts." We can believe this because in an exclusive sit down with us, the action hero had told us that even though it's clearly an inkling for real stories, he is only looking for good quality content. When quizzed if the audience now has taken a liking towards such scripts, John stated, "Yes, if I have to answer in a clichéd way, the audience gets very attracted to real stories. They come to see true stories because the fact is always stranger than fiction. It’s easier to present something that’s real but difficult to make something fictional in order to entertain." He then goes on to reinstate that even when the film is based on real stories of valour, it's meant to entertain and not get preachy. "Let me say this on record, my character is inspired from three different characters – Romeo, Akbar and Walter. We combined the characters into one. Rest everything in the story is fact. Robbie Grewal’s father was in military intelligence. So, we have not gone wrong with any kind of detail. Like the lie detectors, decoding machines – everything was exactly how it happened in 1971. This film is not there to educate but to entertain. Trust me, you will love the climax of RAW. The hero of the film is Robbie. The way he has written and directed it, it’s fantastic," the actor added.

The film also stars Jackie Shroff and Sikander Kher in pivotal roles. Based on a true story, the film is produced by Viacom 18 along with Dheeraj Wadhwan, Ajay Kapoor, Vanessa Walia and Gary Grewal. Our critic, Urmimala Banerjee, liked the film and wrote, "Romeo Akbar Walter is a film made with a lot of attention to details. It is not melodramatic nor is it remotely jingoistic. If you love the espionage genre, you won't be disappointed...just don't expect the high octane action you are accustomed to from Hollywood spy flicks. This one is more subtle and real."
